This years Summer trend has been rotating all around ice cream. New ice cream vendors are popping up all over the grounds of Vancouver. Even though Summer has ended and Fall is coming, it doesn't stop us Vancouverites from eating our favorite cold dessert. One of the latest additions to the Ice Cream list is UYU Ice Cream shop located in Gastown. Their interior has a very interesting pattern that repeats throughout the store but they kept everything else very minimalist, so it still feels very clean & chic.
Every week they launch out different flavors, so next time when you go, the menu may be slightly different. The day when I went, there were 3 flavors on the menu. Organic Milk, Vietnamese Coffee & Sweet Potato.
Their menu is very simple:
1) Choose a base: the only option available was the "Soft Serve" base
2) Choose a flavour: Varies everytime
3) Choose either just ice cream or with topping
4) Choose your complimentary sauce
I ordered the Vietnamese coffee with caramel sauce ($5.00) & Phil ordered the Organic Milk with Caramel ($5.00). We both got our ice cream with a waffle cone. The ice cream texture is very soft and smooth. The caramel sauce is only drizzled on the surface so once that layer of caramel drizzle is gone, the ice cream itself becomes rather plain. For the Vietnamese coffee, it wasn't as strong as I like it to be so without the caramel sauce I felt like it was lacking flavor.
Phil's thoughts on his Organic Milk with caramel: same thing about the caramel sauce and he thought the organic milk ice cream was flavorless without the caramel sauce.
Our friends got Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk ($5.00) & Sweet Potato Ice cream with Caramel ($5.00). Our friend with the Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk thought overall was pretty average and nothing crazy. Our friend with the Sweet Potato Ice cream with caramel sauce thought it was okay but the sweet potato flavor was very mild so he could barely taste it.
Overall, I thought everything was pretty average. It was nice to check out the cool interior and try out their version of organic local soft serve ice creams.
